Children's Book Author, Illustrator and Teacher

Judith Moffatt

My love for paper began with the beautiful samples my Dad would bring home from his job at a printing company. After an early career in advertising I decided to pursue my life-long ambition to become a children’s book illustrator. In 1990 I illustrated my first book using my 3-dimensional cut paper style. Since then I have gone on to publish over 50 books for young children.

When I began speaking at schools and libraries, it gave me the opportunity to see children react to my artwork. Watching them attempt to reach into a page, pluck out an object, or feel the texture would remind me of the enjoyment my dimensional technique added to the story and illustrations. These experiences have become so rewarding that I recently began teaching children’s book illustration, and cut paper workshops at the Rhode Island School of Design.

I have received several awards in international dimensional art competitions. Too Many Rabbits was recognized as an American Pick of the List selection, The Sun-Maid-Raisin Play Book was a Children’s Book of the Month Club main selection, and I Am a... Nature Reader science series won an Oppenheim Best Book Gold Award. My magazine pieces have received awards from The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Highlights for Children Magazine and the Association of Educational Publishers.

My husband and I live with our Tabby cat, Airedale terrier and a variety of other animal friends, who often appear as characters in my books. Our home and studio is in an antique farmhouse on the Charles River in Medway, Massachusetts.
